Kilimanjaro 5 Day Marangu Route

The 5-Day Marangu Route is the shortest hut-based route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is popular with climbers who prefer sleeping in mountain huts instead of tents. While considered one of the more straightforward paths on the mountain, the 5-day itinerary is physically demanding due to limited acclimatization time. It is best suited for fit trekkers with prior hiking experience or those on a tighter schedule. If you’re looking for a classic Kilimanjaro experience with hut accommodation and a direct ascent profile, the Marangu Route is an excellent option.

Kilimanjaro 5 Day Marangu Route

Marangu Route 5 Days – Quick Facts

Route Type: Out-and-back
Accommodation: Mountain huts
Difficulty Level: Moderate to Challenging
Summit Success Rate: 60–65%
Highest Point: Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341 ft)

Why Choose the Marangu Route?

Unlike other routes such as the Machame Route or Lemosho Route, the Marangu Route offers dormitory-style huts with beds and shared dining areas.

Advantages

  • Comfortable hut accommodation
  • Gradual trail gradient
  • Well-established and maintained path
  • Shorter duration (ideal for limited schedules)

Considerations

  • Less acclimatization time
  • Lower summit success rate than 6–7 day routes
  • Same ascent and descent trail

If your priority is comfort and a shorter climb, this route is ideal. If acclimatization and higher success rates are your main concern, a longer itinerary may be better.
